According to the National Academy of Education and the National Institute of Education’s 1985 report Becoming a Nation of Readers, “the single most important activity for building the knowledge required for eventual success in reading is reading aloud to children… The benefits are greatest when the child is an active participant, engaging in discussions about stories, learning to identify letters and words, and talking about the meanings of words.”
What better way to put family reading into practice than by participating in a book club? 😀
Because reading chapter books aloud can take a while, we are allowing two months between meetings. Each meeting will consist of relaxed conversation about the book, as well as a themed snack or small dish that the club will put together during our discussion. The first meeting will take place on Saturday, February 21 from 11:00 AM-12:30 PM. Books are currently available. Space is limited to 8 families. Please sign up at the Children’s Information Desk.
