Miss Kathy visits every Kindergarten class in Derry on a rotating basis throughout the school year! Every Wednesday she visits two to three classrooms to bring literacy and library fun to the children of Derry. She always brings along some puppet friends, hilarious stories, and lots of fun rhymes and songs for the children to learn. Miss Kathy is a local storytime celebrity. Come visit the library and say hello!
The Children’s Department has sent a representative every year for the past four years to Derry Village School’s spring afterschool enrichment program. For an hour each week, one of our librarians visits the school to lead a fun club with emphasis on creativity and community. Past activities have included a Writing Club for 3rd-5th graders, an American Girl Club for 2nd-4th graders, and Origami Club for 3rd-5th graders. We have also been involved with a similar enrichment program at South Range School.
COMMUNITY READING EVENTS
Our librarians love to visit local schools for Dr. Seuss’s Read Across America program! We have read stories at Barka and Grinnell Elementary Schools during these events. In so doing, we’ve been able to connect with children who may not have library cards or perhaps have never been to the library. These are wonderful opportunities to share what the library has to offer!
ST. THOMAS VISITS
Over the past few years, the Derry Public Library and St. Thomas Aquinas school have teamed up to bring exciting literature and technology-based programming to it students. St. Thomas students walk down to the library for field trip-style outings that have included scavenger hunts and technology programs using our laptop lab. Librarians have also visited St. Thomas to give book talks and teach eighth graders how to give storytime readings to Kindergarten and first grade students. Those workshops were a great success!
