Derry Public Library will be starting a new program this October: 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten! This is an early literacy initiative that encourages families to read to their young children and to use the resources available to them at their public libraries. Additionally, the program encourages parent-child bonding through reading.
Why 1,000 books?
Research shows that hearing 1,000 books before a child begins to read independently increases their success. Reading to children increases their vocabulary and their listening and narrative skills. Reading with children also helps to instill in them self-awareness, confidence, and an understanding of our world.
How can I read 1,000 books?
It’s easier than you think!
- 1 book a day for 3 years = 1000 books.
- 3 books a day for 1 year = 1000 books.
- 10 books a week for 2 years = 1000 books.
