One of the ways we’re celebrating National Poetry Month this April is by holding special poetry-themed programming. Today’s afterschool activity was “Artsy Fartsy Poetry” with Miss Nicole. The goal of the program was to create new poems based on some wordless picture books. First, Miss Nicole presented the picture book without much commentary, allowing the audience to soak up all those wonderful images. Next, she went through the same book again, this time asking questions. Finally, the kids were invited to take some of the word associations they had made and put them into awesome poems!
You can try this on your own as a way to bring poetry month home! Not sure of where to find wordless picture books? Our children’s collection has a great assortment. Here are a few titles to get you started (but there are way more to discover):
Flora and the Flamingo, by Molly Idle
Chalk, by Bill Thomson
A Ball for Daisy, by Chris Raschka
Journey, by Aaron Becker
We encourage you to check out one of these, or any of our other wordless picture books (try “wordless picture book” in the keyword search in our catalog and you’ll be happy to find great books for everyone in your house!).
Here are a few photos of today’s program. Look at that table FULL of wordless picture books!
